Shakespeare in Action: March 20th

Updated: Mar 24, 2019

Shakespeare in Action attended Blyth Academy once more in late March to engage both Grade 12 and 10 students through getting them to perform a variety of Shakespearian lines. Here's what Sami Whittall and Cameron McLean (also in Journalism Club) had to say about the day:

Cameron McLean:

March 17th, 2019. The day Blyth Academy was not just a school, but also the centrepiece of what some may call the screeching of children trying to sound philosophical, or maybe even a bit crazy. "Howl! Howl!" One can’t appreciate Shakespeare by simply reading it, because it’s not meant to be read. It’s a play! Plays must be experienced, felt, acted, and given as much emotion as possible.

A time where you’re allowed to insult others using hilarious words is always a good time for me; Mr Cohen made us meet our maker, some say some of the students went home crying that day. With little use of stage directions in Shakespeare plays, it really makes you get creative when you have to act out a scene, especially when three guys acting as girls pretend to suck up to a king in little girly voices while everyone laughs at them. All in all, we learned a lot from Shakespeare in Action and recommend it for anyone who wants to delve into the tides of Shakespeare: just don’t give away all your land like King Lear.

Sami Whittall:

Well that was quite a day. It was filled with yelling, acting, and Shakespeare. We did different exercises to warm up, and then we were off. Hamed used Alabbas as a dead Cordillia. That was really funny. During break everyone watched as we howled at absolutely nothing. The lead, who ran the Shakespeare in Action workshop, was great. However, we did inform the lead and Mr.Cohen that The Fool died. He was upset. Oh well, all good things come to an end. Just like The Fool...
