The Knife of Never Letting Go

Writer's picture: It'sMyBlyth It'sMyBlyth

Imagine a world where you could hear everyone else’s thoughts and they can hear yours. This is all Todd Hewitt has ever known. Todd lives in a strange place called Prentisstown. Why is it strange you ask? Besides being able to hear every man’s thoughts in town and living in a world with constant Noise, there are no women in Prentisstown. There haven’t been for some time. Todd has no memory of his mother who he was told died. The Knife of Never Letting Go is an extremely compelling novel. The words fly off the pages and take you to a completely unimaginable world.

Summary

One day, the mayor of Prentisstown sends his son after Todd. The mayor wants Todd because he is the youngest boy in Prentisstown. The last to become a man. There are many secrets about Prentisstown that Todd is determined to learn. He is completely in the dark as to why he is wanted. With the help of his guardian, Ben, he is able to escape into the deep unknown forest with his beloved dog, Manchee. Shortly after his “escape” he comes across a figure. No, a person. No, a girl. Todd has never seen a girl before. He soon realizes she has no Noise. He cannot hear her thoughts. How strange. The girl is all alone in the wilderness. Todd tries talking to her, wondering if she understands him. The girl doesn’t respond for quite a long time. Instead, she just leads him to where her ship fell from the sky and crashed. To where her dead parents lie. Silently, she follows Todd, neither of them knowing where they are going.

'A Stay-Up-Way-Too-Late Book'

Todd just talks and talks, trying to at least find out her name. They just walk on, leaving Prentisstown far behind. The girl finally speaks to Todd: “ Viola.” She says. “My name is Viola.” Todd and Viola become close friends throughout the book. Although they sometimes get separated for long periods of time; they manage to find their way back to each other every time. They are constantly saving one another from danger and the numerous men that try to kill them along the way. Together, they face many challenges, the mayor’s men and a crazy pastor chasing them, and much more. Todd and Viola are always running into problems. If you are interested in adventure novels, this is the book for you. I personally couldn’t put it down. It’s so compelling.

This is really a 'read alone, stay-up-way-too-late book.' It’s thrilling. Something is always happening. This is a book about friendship, rules, communication, and choices. I would recommend this novel to young adults who enjoy an exciting novel.
