Let’s take a quick trip down memory lane and reminisce about when Candy Crush first hit the App Store. Any puzzle lover hopped on the bandwagon and began to play the new innovative matching game. Where is Candy Crush now? How many people still play the game?
What is Homescapes?
Homescapes is the new, modern Candy Crush. Just like the parent game, Homescapes is free to download with the option for in-app purchases. With beautiful graphics and appealing quests, what makes it stand out from the original game everyone came to love? The twist; you get to renovate a mansion as you play.
The Characters
When you first start the game, you meet Austin and his two parents. His parents want to sell their mansion but Austin is determined to stay at the house and goes on a mission to save it and make his parents fall in love with it again. He is considered the protagonist of the entire game. His parents are a huge part of the game as well but don’t offer much to the game other than being a part of the renovation process.
As the game progresses, you meet new characters who are crucial to the gameplay. They can range from possible antagonists to furry friends. All the characters in the game are important and offer their own story; it’s up to you to figure out why.
How to play
The levels mimic Candy Crush almost exactly. You must make matches of three to five and destroy the pieces on the board. There are special power-ups depending on how many of the same colour you match. You can create: bombs, rockets, kites, and a special ball that all help you get through your level. The game has two types of levels, regular and challenging. If you are successful in beating the level you will get coins as well as a star. The coins are not very helpful but the star(s) is what helps you to complete your tasks and move forward in the renovation process. The difficulty of the task determines how many stars you will need.
The Contests
The game, like Candy Crush, requires “lives” to play. Losing a level will cost you a life and when you’re out of lives you have to wait to play again. Occasionally, there are times when you get to participate in various contests for prizes. Some contests require you to link the game to a Facebook account to end up on a leaderboard but some are just placed into the game for some extra fun. Within these contests, you can win various numbers of power-ups as well as unlimited lives from a range of half an hour to three hours. I recommend participating in the contests because of how fun they can be. How great of a feeling is it when you see your name moving up the leaderboard and you’re beating all your friends?
I believe the game deserves an 8/10. It’s so easily addicting and while the levels do get harder, once you’re on a roll you never want to stop. The one thing that could be improved could be the number of stars you get per level. One star per level can make the game seem as though it’s going by slowly and users might get bored when they feel there isn’t enough action. I think if the challenging level offered a two-star reward it would make it more appealing for users to want to continue playing.
