World Oceans Day: How we can reduce our use of plastic

Updated: May 27, 2019

The ocean is dying. We know this for a fact. World Ocean Day is an important day for everyone to understand the amount of waste polluting every inch of our oceans on a daily basis. Humans use a lot of waste, and it is necessary for us to cut down on how much we consume in order for our planet to become a more sustainable place for our future generation. Studies suggest we only have twelve years ahead of us in order to make major changes to the climate and how our world will function. You might already be concerned about all the issues we are facing in today’s environment and may be asking yourself: what can I do to help the environment?

Here are some things you can do in order to help the environment:

Use Reusable Bags

When getting groceries with your parents or simply going by yourself, bring some reusable bags in order to lessen the effect of one blowing away into our oceans.

Print as Little as Necessary

In this digital age, it is unnecessary to be printing everything you are working on. Instead, inquire about emailing or sending digital projects as one way to reduce paper consumption that ends up in landfills.

Recycle

This one is big. We all know this, but a major thing to add is to ensure you are cleaning out the containers in which you are looking to recycle. If not, the people will consider it waste and put it to rot away for hundreds of years in landfills.

Use a Reusable Beverage Containers

When getting your daily dose of Tim Hortons or Starbucks, bring along a reusable cup; you might even get a discount for doing so! Even at a drive through, they would be happy to use a reusable beverage cup instead of being one of the hundreds of thousands who are going to throw it away after using it for maybe 10 minutes. Think ahead!

Save Electricity!

Bright sunny day? Turn off all the lights in your house and use the sun as your source of light. If dark, use a candle or battery powered source in order to save on your energy bill and also conserve how much electricity you are using on a daily basis. This will help immensely with emissions that come from using energy on a daily basis.

We all play a part in how our Earth is going to be. Conserve everything you can and reconsider how we on a daily basis use waste as a form of consumption. Please remember we are not the only ones here and abide by the three rules: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!
