A$AP Rocky is not only a rapper, but an amazing artist and innovator of his time. His newest single is a drastic change, but we as listeners can get a better understanding of A$AP’s personal idea of what the “rap-rock” sub-genre is.
We all know the conventional genres of music: Rap, Rock, Country and Pop. But what if there was a way we could combine a few to make something interesting? This is exactly what A$AP Rocky did in his newest single Sundress.
Speaking about being in love with a woman who is already taken, he goes into detail about how her current man is not good enough and should be with someone who is much better: A$AP. Sure this can be seen as the “not-so-typical” love song, but his is something much deeper than this. Instead of creating the bass-loaded, angry sounding typical Rap songs of today’s generation, he decided to look at another route: an alternative route.
Sampling is something almost every rapper does... taking inspiration from other people’s music and giving their own spin on it. For A$AP, he decided to do this through the electronic indie band Tame Impala. Listening to their earlier album Innerspeaker: he found the song Why Won’t You Make Up Your Mind? It got him thinking: how he could create something so much more than it already is? Well he did… and people are loving it.
People from different music tastes claim A$AP to be “ahead of his time” and “completely underrated.” Pitchfork claims this Rap-Rock masterpiece is “something to remember for generations to come.” This song is significant because people who don’t usually listen to Rap music can look to this song and think twice about the entire genre as a whole.
With its heavy drum beats coming straight from Kevin Parker, it soothes the listener into a trance like no other. On top of that, its endearing lyrics are an additional bonus: making it the perfect listen for anyone with an infatuation for someone else. In a way, it’s like A$AP wanted his listeners to be apart of something much bigger than the music. He is educating people on how they can create content very different to what is “normal” or “conventional.” Artists like A$AP enjoy dipping their feet into different genres, but only some come back with positive feedback. With Sundress, it is a definite change in the way he was creating music, but it definitely supports him and the way people of today see Rap music and the Hip-Hop genre as a whole.
