Veld Music Festival 2018

Toronto’s all ages music festival… Veld. The festival was amazing this year. The line-up was exceptional. The crowd was un-real and everything about it was crazy.

Let’s start off by going over the line up. Starting with the headliners: DJ Snake, Migos, Marshmello and Martin Garrix. I was overall pretty upset about these headliner acts except Martin Garrix and DJ Snake.

First off, I am not a huge fan of Rap at music festivals unless it is an all Rap festival, but Veld is pretty much, and is branded, as an EDM festival. So with putting a Rap artist (Migos) as a headliner doesn't really make sense to me. Maybe that is the market they want to go into? But I can tell you they are going to loose a lot of amazing EDM fans by doing that. On the bright side, they handled it pretty well by having had a stage for mostly Rap artists although a few artists such as Nightmare played the venue.

Next, I am a diehard Bass-head and an EDM lover, so I was not happy with Marshmallo getting a spot as a headliner since he plays Pre-recorded sets! He is not a DJ! He is a music producer! So why are the people behind veld putting him as a headliner? Because he has a few catchy songs? Or made a few big songs with other artists? Honestly, I couldn’t tell you but all I can say is Marshmello plays the same set where ever he goes. No matter how many times he plays a venues/festivals all over the world it is always the same. Who wants to see that? Nobody! So I was pretty upset when I saw him as a headliner.

Veld had a huge hiccup on the first day. There were thousands of people and they only had 5 water stations which were a free for all. If you wanted water you would have to push and shove your way to the front to stay hydrated. But towards the end of first day, which was up to 25 degrees Celsius, three of the water stations broke, turning the other 2 into a complete zoo of ravers. This made a lot of people upset, including me. I said hell with it and left it alone and kept raving, which I would not advise but I wasn’t missing the sets of some artists I wanted to see. Since you never know if you would see them again. So this was probably the ultimate failure of Veld 2018.

On a good note, Veld had a whole bunch of unique events from fire works and CO2 smoke to an amazing Bass and Trance tent. The Bass and Trance tent was my favourite because it gave a feeling of what European tent raves are like. I also saw two of my favourite Trance artist. Cosmic Gate and Aly and Fila which made my time in this tent exceptional.

To wrap up, my time at Veld the final set was Martin Garrix who played one of the most emotional sets I have ever witnessed. He brought some ravers to tears. But overall brought everyone at the festival together for a time no body will ever forget, making Veld 2018 the best Veld yet and if you missed it then there is always next year!
