The Notebook: A love story in some eyes; a tragedy in others

The Notebook is a dramatic romance movie based on the #1 New York Times bestseller by Nicholas Sparks. There are two storylines followed throughout the film. One is about two seventeen-year-olds who fall madly in love when they meet at a summer carnival in the 1940s.  The young rich girl is named Allie Hamilton (Rachel McAdams) and the poor quarry worker is Noah Jr (Ryan Gosling). After their epic meeting at the start of the film, Allie and Noah become inseparable. Unfortunately, the romance doesn’t last long since Allie is only in Seabrook for the summer. The young couple tries to spend every last second with each other and get into some wicked fights along the way. Allie’s parents soon learn about Noah and strongly disapprove due to his social class. The summer of their lives soon ends and Allie is forced back to New York with her parents. Noah is left in Seabrook without Allie and so he begins to write letters to her every day for a year. The Notebook is a great movie that compels people right from the start. I strongly suggest watching it if you are fans of romance movies or Nicholas Sparks. It will make you cry and laugh at certain times, which is the best type of movie in my opinion.

More than a love story

A few years later, war soon breaks out in the United States. Noah enlists and Allie works as a nurse. They have not seen each other since she left. Allie soon finds love again with a soldier she met in the hospital, Lon Hammond (James Marsden). They go out on dates and he spoils her with jewellery as he is very wealthy. Lon proposes to Allie. Meanwhile, Noah is back from the war and working on building himself a house that he hoped he would share with Allie. We see Allie doing well for herself whereas Noah has nothing. No love. No family. No friends. However, Allie finds her newly engaged self back in Seabrook when she sees a picture of Noah and the house he is building in the newspaper. They spent a day together when Allie shows up on his doorstep. Even though they fight and fall into old habits, they both know that they were meant to be together.

The other storyline is about an old man named Duke (James Garner) who reads a romance story to an old woman with memory loss and senile dementia (Gena Rowlands). He reads to her the story of Noah and Allie. The old woman finds herself getting very engaged in the story. Always wondering “Who will she choose?” as Duke continues to read to her.

The Notebook will definitely be one of the top love stories of all time. I truly believe it is a love story but, you will have to watch it for yourself and decide.
