A historic love story like no other
In the aftermath of WWII, aspiring writer Juliet Ashton (Lily James) begins exchanging letters with a man called Dawsey Adams (Michiel Huisman) from the island of Guernsey. Juliet is fascinated by the people of Guernsey and its history. The island of Guernsey was also under German occupation during World War II. The man tells Juliet about his society in which she is greatly intrigued and dying to know more about. Juliet wants to able to write about the The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. In order to do this, she must go to Guernsey. Right before her departure from London to Guernsey, her boyfriend Mark, proposes to her and she gleefully accepts.
The Island of Guernsey
Once Juliet arrives on the island of Guernsey, she meets everyone from the society including the man she exchanged letters with, Dawsey Adams. Juliet asks the society for permission to write a book about them and their experiences during the war, but to her dismay they decline almost immediately. This baffles Juliet and her curiosity about the society increases. She is vaguely told about the woman who started The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, Elizabeth and that she is overseas. Juliet remains in Guernsey for the weekend, telling the group that she is just conducting research on the German occupation. She begins asking more and more questions trying to find out what happened to Elizabeth. Why is she not on the island? Why is Dawsey looking after her daughter? Juliet wants answers. She begins to get some details from certain members of the society as they start to open up to her. Juliet learns some shocking news about Elizabeth that changes everything. She calls her fiance Mark, hoping he can help locate Elizabeth. Mark arrives then with information about Elizabeth, much to Juliet’s surprise. The couple get into an argument because Juliet is not wearing her engagement ring. Perhaps she is in love with someone else. You will have to wait and see!
“It’s so Compelling”
This film has it all. The history, love, and drama make for a well done and compelling movie. I was hooked from the start. Fans of The Notebook should definitely consider watching this film. I highly recommend The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society.
