As the Fellowship arrived at the doors there was a riddle easier then ever, or so anyone thought. At first Gandalf spoke words in Elvish, in hopes the door would open in his favour. But nothing happened.
The next few hours were spent with Gandalf thinking to himself while Pippen examined the riddle. The others were either sleeping or eating supper, except for Frodo and Sam throwing rocks at the water. Strider heard them and stopped them immediately and told them that the water must not be disturbed.
It took Gandalf until sunset to figure out how simple the riddle really was. He spoke the words the riddle was hoping for then, alas! The door opened and a tentacle shot out the water and grabbed Frodo’s leg.
As Frodo is being pulled in Pippin and Mary see Frodo getting dragged into the water and slice the tentacle before anything else could happen.
