Kevin Parker is a twenty-first century musical prodigy. His latest album should be recognized as a masterpiece: giving a new meaning to the term “mainstream.”
Do you know that feeling when you immediately have to repeat a song before it can even end? There are so many emotions running through your mind that you cannot even believe the sounds coming out of the speakers are even real. Suddenly, it all stops. You have an aching desire to listen to it over and over again. The entirety of Currents is that feeling.
Flow: this is the basis of Kevin Parker’s latest creation. He himself has written, recorded, produced, and mixed the entire album, giving Currents a very authentic and visceral sound. It is able to wrap the ears in a symphony that could go on forever. However, the recognition it receives is never going to be mainstream.
In a world where Rap and Hip Hop are dominating the charts, Currents gives a new meaning to what it means to make good music that may be different to what is considered the traditional Pop or Rock song. Parker’s psychedelic background on past albums, such as Innerspeaker, has shifted in Currents to a more moving, dance-type sound that can make any person feel a bit lighter on their feet.
Pitchfork describes this album as a “...result of a supernaturally talented obsessive trying to perfect music.” With an overall rating of 9.5, Kevin Parker has dove a little deeper into himself: writing music for people who understand what it means to be living with pain, but moving on from it and to just let it happen.
This album is a symphonic masterpiece. From its incredible production to Parker’s ever changing vocal ranges, Currents provides people with what the Beatles and Rolling Stones did in their time: something they have never heard before. It has completely changed the way older generations view new artists and their music. Therefore, every person should be listening to this album because it is the definitive meaning of where music is, and where it should be going in the near future.
