Socks: Putting Their Best Foot Forward

Socks have stomped their way into becoming a near-essential clothing item today by keeping your toes warm, reducing risk of fungi growth, and preventing blisters, but do they really put their best foot forward overall? Yes, yes they do.

Socks, especially wool ones, have proven to be brilliant insulators—even when they get wet, and they dry quite fast, which protects your toes from the biting cold of winter in all conditions whether you’re wearing rainboots, sneakers, or heavy duty snow boots. The only downside is that it is not recommended to machine-wash wool socks, advising a hand-washing option which is tedious and inconvenient, but the great part about socks is there are a variety of options. Cotton socks are machine- washable, and thinner which is perfect for high-activity action like running, which requires a bit more ankle flexion.

Speaking of high-activity, athlete’s foot thrives in dampness, and going out without socks increases this risk because there is no fiber to absorb moisture like sweat. Wearing socks steers moisture away. Cotton socks even have natural anti-bacterial properties, so not only will your feet be nice and toasty, but they’ll be perfectly clean.

New shoes are stylish, but they can also cause painful blisters in areas around the heel and sides of the feet which are disastrous for the look you’re going for. Not to worry; socks provide a protective barrier between the shoe and your foot, keeping the stubborn backs from constantly nipping at your heels. Tighter socks are best for this, as looser-fitting socks can rub and contribute further to those nasty blisters, so make sure you have the right size.

So, socks have proved themselves to be worthy of their responsibility as the official guardians of your feet, keeping your toes warm, reducing risk of fungi growth, and preventing blisters. Cotton or wool, socks put their best foot forward so you can too.
