Ralph's Opinion of Jack in Lord of the Flies

"Sucks to the litluns."

I was not surprised when I heard these words out of Jack’s mouth.

Piggy looked at me with a face that screamed ‘do something!’ I knew in the back of my mind that someone had to look after the littluns, but at the same time, I sure as hell wasn’t going to volunteer to do it.

“Well, well” I stammered,

“Piggy will do it, he can't do anything on a count of his asthma anyway, right fatty?”

Picking on Piggy was pathetic, almost too easy. But he never did anything about it and it gave me a sense of authority.

“That's right!” Exclaimed Jack.

“Shut up! You haven't got the conch!”

Jack started to speak again but stopped as if something told him to seize.

“ We ought to put together a team to relight the fire and get the beast” He searched the crowd.

“Myself, Jack, Simon,” he paused and look at Piggy…

“And all the rest of the biguns, you know who you are, cmon now”

A littlun approached Ralph.

“ I’ll go”, he said

Ralph stared at the little boy with bright green eyes. Huge. Fairly dark hair.

He took the little bit of the kindness from his old lifestyle and picked up the little boy.

He looked into those eyes, placing the boy on his hip.

“You musn’t come now. It's much too dangerous”

With that the little boy joined the others and ran off until he couldn't be seen

“Are you even coming.” said Jack

Snapping Ralph out of his sad and now longing for home state.

It wasn't a day’s travel. A couple hours at most. The boys had no sense of time, but had quickly adapted to their new situation figuring out time by the sun and the routines of the island. As the end site approached the suspense grew larger and larger in the group of boys who hoped they had been wrong about the so called “beast”.

It was Jack to first speak and turn to Ralph and say  “I ain’t scared, I never been scared of anything in my whole life”.

This comforted Ralph in a way he could not express. He turned to Jack and smiled, feeling warmed by the almost friendly situation.

Simon silently watched the interaction between the boys and feared he would be forgotten if Jack and Ralph suddenly got along.

This urged him to run up to jack and awkwardly whisper ”I ain’t scared either Ralph. I've known since the bloody start that the beast was fake!”

As the boys were coming to a stop at thier destination Ralph was not paying enough attention to listen or to care about the words that Simon spoke. Simon slinked to the back of the group again with his feelings a little more damaged then before.

“It’ll be me” said Jack. “I’m the head of the hunters and the most qualified.”

“Says who?” yells Simon. This wasn’t like him, but, the past couple of minutes triggered his emotions to release these words.

Jack shot a look at Simon who’s checks had gone bright red, he looked down at his bare dirty feet and no longer spoke. The boys were silent.

Ralph broke the silent tension with his words.

“I’m chief. I’ll go. Don’t argue.”
