Love: the basis of many confusing and complicated songs. New Order makes no exception to the rule...this song demonstrating both sides of the story.
Starting after former lead singer Ian Curtis of Joy Division passed away, New Order was a totally different sound to that of their previous endeavors.
Diving deep into what it was to live in the time of the eighties, they experiment with synth sounds and drum kits from many keyboards and baseboards. With this, they produced Bizarre Love Triangle: released in 1986.
The song begins with a heavy crash on the drums over and over again. This gives the listener the impression that it is going to be a hard track… but it’s not. Quite the opposite, really. Lead singer Bernard Summer sings on behalf of his inner desperation toward the person he wants to love.
Throughout the entirety of the track itself: his lover has the same feelings towards him. Tension is created between the both of them: making this one different, but a great love song. Bizarre Love Triangle indeed.
The use of strings within the track give into the idea that this song is going to launch the listener into a new dimension. It continues to get higher and higher, ascending them into the story even further. It can even make them feel as if they are a part of the story themselves.
If you have ever been in love: you cannot get them off of your mind. This song is a result of that. The lead singer is the voice in the back of every lovers mind, wanting you to push through and tell the person you have feelings towards that you love them. The concept itself is very important to many and resonates with even more, which is why this song was (and still is) very popular.
Bizarre Love Triangle represents that no matter what time you live in or what you are going through: love always remains. The same ideals and thoughts written about remain 33 years later. Therefore, this song is one the greatest of its time, but continues to be as addictive as it was to this present day.
