Chapter 1 of Lord of the Flies from Jack's point of view

“Let him be chief with the trumpet-thing”

When Ralph was chosen as leader I was mortified. I have plenty of great leadership-like qualities that make me a great leader. I am comfortable and confident with being a leader and have had plenty of practice due to being the leader of the choir boys/hunters.

“The freckles on Jack’s face disappeared under a blush of mortification”.

When the boys were deciding I predicted, without a doubt, that I would be leader. I don’t understand why anyone would choose Ralph as a leader over me, as I am in charge of the hunters. Personally I believe I am a better leader than Jack. I think this because: I already have the leadership skills, I am able to get respect from the group, I know how to remain in control and I am a confident person. I am able to convince the hunters to do anything I want them to do. Not only do I have great skills that backup the reasoning, I also have my eyes on finding a way for us to remain fed while on the island. I am using the hunters to hunt for food so that we have food to eat that will fuel us up to find a way home. Even though I am many years younger than Ralph I have many more leadership-like qualities than he does.

Ralph, however, does not portray many leadership qualities. He does not have the confidence or ability to take on such a big role like that. Ralph struggles to get the respect from the group that I naturally receive. With the hunters already following my instructions, the rest of the group mainly just follow my orders as well. Ralph constantly gets mad but is never sure how to get everyone’s attention and put his foot down. Originally he wanted to be leader. Although, once he found out how much work is required he began to struggle. Ralph is able to keep himself on task and does everything a leader should do, he just is not comfortable with telling the rest of the group what to do. For example, when Ralph wants something done (shelters to be built, rules to be followed, tasks to be completed, etc) he only takes it upon himself rather than encouraging the rest of the group to assist him or follow his rules. He is not strict enough to be a leader.

I am not sure why I was not chosen as a leader. I portray all of the leadership-like qualities. Whereas Ralph has all of the great ideas that will get the group off of the island faster. However, what is the point of having all of these great ideas if no one is following the instructions? Personally, I believe we would be great co-leaders. Co-leading would be very successful and work better for everyone. This would work because: I could keep everyone in line by getting them to listen and follow instructions, Ralph could come up with the ideas to get home, and co-leading would help us create a closer bond rather than having the group so separated! When two people have great qualities that are different, combining is always a great way to use both of the people’s benefits. We need to get off of the island so why not give the co-leading a try? If people have a problem with it; I highly doubt they will, they can settle it with me.

“Jack’s in charge of the choir”.

Once the vote had ended, and decisions were made, I was told I would remain in charge of the choir boys. Which I did not expect anything else. Due to me still being in charge of the choir boys, I still have some power. The power I have is working more effectively than Ralph taking on the leadership role. Even though he is the oldest, co-leading would benefit both of us. I would be able to learn and understand how to strategize while Ralph could work on being more confident as a leader. Co-leading would benefit everyone; especially Ralph. He would gain some confidence and knowledge about how to be a respected leader and he would actually be able to express his ideas and thoughts to people who will listen and want to hear them.
