Every person’s music taste is different: especially in today’s society where so many decades have shaped the way in which we listen to music. My personal music taste has been changing from the moment I began listening to music. With this, comes my own personal list of artists that I love currently:
MGMT
This psychedelic rock group formed in 2002 and has made music that changed the way I perceive it. Andrew and Ben began as college students, playing songs that were a play on Pop music: wanting to appropriate it by making super catchy songs that they could

personally make fun of. However, these singles came to be rated on many charts as some of the best music ever made. Songs such as “Kids” and “Time to Pretend” were revolutionary, taking on a new form to the term “Pop-Star.” Additionally, the album “Oracular Spectacular”, that features these singles, is rated the 248th best album of all time. They are my favourite artists because of their humble background, quirky personality and overall quirky music.

Experimental music straight out of Canada. Based from Toronto, Ontario in 2003...Crystal Castles make some of the oddest music I have ever listened to: which is exactly why I love it. Gothic, dark, but also fun and mysterious. This band perfectly takes something so simple and makes it into something distorted and scary. On their first self titled album, the music mostly comes from lead keyboardist Ethan Kath, sampling an Atari 5200 over and over again. With the help of vocalist Alice Glass, these two came together to create something the world never knew could be created.

Here we go again with Kevin Parker. To me: pure genius. The only thing Kevin does not do on his records is…well he does everything. From sampling, drumkits, guitars, vocals, and production, Kevin does it all. Coming from a background of his father telling him to not pursue a music career and instead focus on his studies, Kevin soon became one of the greatest Indie-Pop artists of today’s generation. From Perth, Australia, he creates amazing music that takes the listener through his life stories. His latest album Currents is incredible, and nothing can compare to what Tame Impala is and what it is going to continue to be in today’s day and age.

Such a short career for this band, but such an impact to the way in which music has been created today. In the time of the late 1970s, glamorous and fun Rock & Roll became what every teenager would listen to. However, there was an Ian Curtis. He did not necessarily rebel against the genre, but created a whole new way of listening and looking upon it. Terribly depressing: this band’s lead singer, and the music that came along with it is the definition of melancholy. The band’s slow, but progressive album Unknown Pleasures is rated #20 on the top 100 Best Debut Albums of All Time in Rolling Stone magazine.
