“It will make you laugh, it will make you cry” said one of my close friends when I asked her how she felt about the newly released film: Bohemian Rhapsody. I was debating watching the film after my friend had just told me about her fourth viewing of it. I said to myself “what the heck, let’s see what this fuss is about”.
My first impression of the movie was that all the actors were amazing and truly played their parts to their full potential. Despite what many critics are saying about Rami Malek's performance, I think that he was marvellous. From the perfect mix of a Persian/British accent to the costumes that he more than pulled off, I don’t think anyone else could have been better suited for the role. Even though the actors were great I did have a bit of trouble keeping up with the sudden changes of scenery and era at the beginning of the film. The date of time was constantly changing and I feel like there were gaps that could have been filled with critical information. At two hours and thirteen minutes it’s a long film but I feel as if the time management could have been used in a better way. Once the movie picked up it was incredibly interesting.
Everyone knows that Queen is amazing but it was truly and simply very cool to see what kind of hurdle the band went through and how it was not nearly close to “smooth sailing”. Queen's most famous song, Bohemian Rhapsody was turned down many times and called “completely adequate” by many famous newspapers such as The Daily Telegraph and The New York Times. It is now known to be one of the world’s greatest songs, which shouldn’t come as a surprise, for when it was re released it hit the #1 spot on the charts within a week. The movie did an amazing job of displaying this journey as well as showing the creation of many other hit songs by Queen such as: We Will Rock You, We Are The Champions, Under Pressure, and Love of My Life which was written for Freddie Mercury’s best friend and short time Fiancé. The way most of these songs were put together and discovered is truly fascinating.
As well as taking you down the path of music, the film also took you down a path of the band members personal lives. This was an eye opener and revealed that the members did not live a rockstar lifestyle 100% of the time.
In conclusion, this film did have a slow and little bit confusing start but once it picked up my eyes were glued to the screen and I am now playing Queen on repeat throughout my whole house. It is a fascinating story that will capture you in a way most movies don’t and will make you wish you saw Queen in live concert!
